MB 2012 – Playoff Recap
Posted: June 18, 2012 Filed under: MB 2012 Leave a comment »Due to the flawed structure of MB 2012, the points for the playoffs began accumulating before the matchups were set. Additionally, points for future rounds were piling up even though the matchups for those rounds could not yet be determined. The flaws in the structure have (hopefully) been rectified for MB 2013. However, despite those flaws the first MegaBracket playoffs did provide some drama, mostly confined to the first round.
With the 8 members of MB seeded according to regular season finish, the first round matchups looked like this:
#1 seed Bristol vs. #8 seed Bred
#2 seed Jimmy vs. #7 seed JP
#3 seed Greg vs. #6 seed Chris
#4 seed Ryan vs. #5 seed Doug
With the #7 and #8 seeds up for grabs at the end of the regular season, top seeds Bristol and Jimmy were each rooting for a match-up with JP and not Bred. Bred’s residence at the bottom of the standings was due to many un-submitted sets of picks and the leaders’ reticence for facing him in the first round would turn out to be warranted. While Jimmy coasted to a first round victory over JP and Ryan pulled away late for a solid victory over Doug, the #2 and #3 seeds were in trouble from the get-go.
A resounding victory by Bred in the Kentucky Derby (and on Bristol’s wedding day, no less) turned that match-up in favor of the last seed while Chris jumped out to an early lead over Greg in the 3-6 contest and looked to hang on. Bred scored crucial victories in the WCLA D-II championship (a one-goal win by North Carolina over Towson) and a Women’s Water Polo semifinal (USC downed cross-town rival UCLA) to put Bristol on the brink of elimination. Greg hung around in the other tightly contested quarterfinal and both matches would come down to the final two events, Men’s and Women’s D-II Tennis. Both higher seeds held feint hopes until a Grand Canyon loss to Augusta State in the men’s quarterfinals doomed Bristol to a heart-breaking 6-point loss, and a Barry defeat at the hands of Armstrong Atlantic in the women’s semifinals sent Greg to the consolation bracket after a 29-point defeat. The first ever MegaBracket Semifinals would go on without the #1 and #3 seeds.
Second Round Matchups
Winners Bracket:
#4 Ryan vs. #8 Bred
#2 Jimmy vs. #6 Chris
Consolation Bracket:
#1 Bristol vs. #5 Doug
#3 Greg vs. #7 JP
Neither Bred nor Chris could conjure up the same first round magic and the semifinals played out as a snooze-fest compared to the drama of the first round. Ryan and Jimmy took early commanding leads and never looked back, setting up a date with destiny between the #2 and #4 seeds. Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, the first round upset victims took out their fat aggression on Doug and JP as Bristol and Greg notched convincing victories. The longtime NBA Live rivals would meet in the playoffs, but would battle for a place four spots lower than each had hoped.
Final Round Matchups
Championship:
#2 Jimmy vs. #4 Ryan
3rd Place:
#6 Chris vs. #8 Bred
5th Place:
#1 Bristol vs. #3 Greg
7th Place
#5 Doug vs. #7 JP
The final round events are still going on, but each match has been clinched as the schedule winds down. Doug has run away with the 7th place match while Bristol clinched the 5th place win over the previous weekend. Chris has waltzed to a 3rd place postseason finish as Bred has chosen to rest up in anticipation of MB 2013. Jimmy raced out to an early lead in the championship match and fought off a couple of challenges from a game Ryan. The second season of MegaBracket is not quite complete but we know the man that will wear the crown until next season.
MB 2012 Playoff Placing
- Jimmy
- Ryan
- Chris
- Bred
- Bristol
- Greg
- Doug
- JP
Congratulations to Jimmy, the MegaBracket 2012 Champion!
MB 2012 – End of Days
Posted: June 18, 2012 Filed under: MB 2012 | Tags: MB 2012 Leave a comment »As June rolls to a close, so does the first 12-month season of MegaBracket. A long, strange journey that began with the IFL and SIFL last June ends with the crowning of the UIFL champion on July 2. All of the final round playoff matchups have been clinched, however, meaning the remaining MB 2012 events to be completed are simply for accounting purposes. In the meantime, another season begins, bringing with it a sense of renewal and championship hopes in the homes of all of the competitors, except perhaps in Chicago where the odds are in favor of another title-less season for the Cubs JP . However, before we move on and jump headlong into MB 2013 (our 3rd season), let us take a look back at the year that was…
MegaBracket 2012 – A Season in Review
Part 1 of many several ??? – The Regular Season
The season kicked off on June 18, 2011 with the opening of the Indoor Football League and the Southern Indoor Football League playoffs. (In a nod to the nature of many of the events contained in MegaBracket, the SIFL no longer exists.) Five playoff games were played on June 18, opening the first year-long season of MegaBracket. Foreshadowing much of the future, Bristol & Jimmy shared the MB lead after Day 1, while JP occupied the basement.
The 2012 season employed event-based divisions, rather than the time-based blocks coming in MB 2013. This circumstance led to several divisions typically being contested at once, perhaps distracting from the races. Chris earned the first division title, claiming the Baseball division by an 8-point margin over Ryan. The division titles meant little other than pride in MB 2012, although the plan for the future is to tie each division (now MegaBlock) championship to a spot in the 16-person MegaBracket playoffs. The esteemed list of division winners during the regular season is shown below.
- Pro Football – Bred
- Fall Pro Sports – Bred
- Baseball – Chris
- Collegiate Winter Sports – Bristol
- Volleyball & Soccer – Chris
- Winter & Spring Pro Sports – Greg
- College Football – Bristol
- CIS – Bristol
- Men’s Basketball – Bristol
- Women’s Basketball – Bristol
- College Hockey – Doug
- Spring NCAA – Jimmy
- Division I Men’s Basketball – Greg
- Canadian Hockey – Bristol
Bristol led the way with 6 division titles while Bred, Chris & Greg each captured two. The final two crowns were taken by Doug and Jimmy. Jimmy had the most division runner-ups with 4, Bristol and Greg had 3 each, Doug 2, and Chris and Ryan one apiece.
The overall points battle was intense early in the season, although Bristol took a commanding lead in November and never looked back, earning the #1 seed heading into the post-season. While Chris had a lockdown on the 6th seed for several months as well, there were several lively battles for seeding position. Jimmy and Greg battled for 2nd & 3rd until the final weeks of the regular season, while the 4th & 5th seeds (Ryan & Doug) and the 7th & 8th seeds (JP & Bred) came down to the final days and in the case of JP & Bred, the final moments. In the end, Jimmy, Ryan & JP nailed down the better seeds as the regular season came to a close.
Final Regular Season Standings
- Bristol – 12512
- Jimmy – 11634
- Greg – 11423
- Ryan – 10312
- Doug – 10178
- Chris – 9540
- JP – 7661
- Bred – 7629

Note: Due to having less than 24 hours between qualifying and the running of the Iowa Corn Indy 500 (and that time occurring from Friday night to Saturday night), the Iowa Corn Indy 250 will be dropped from the MegaBracket schedule unless the 5th place match between Greg and Bristol is still up for grabs. In that event, the UIFL would be the final event picked for MB 2012. However, have no fear, MB 2013 is right around the corner.

Today, we take a look through MB-colored glasses at the other Cinderella story to reach Omaha, the Kent State Golden Flashes. Like the Seawolves, the Golden Flashes are making their first appearance at the College World Series.
Kent State University
Location: Kent, OH (population: 28,904 as of 2010 census)
Established: 1910
Enrollment: ~27,800 on the Kent campus

Historical Note: Kent State was the site of the May 4 Massacre in 1970, during which 4 unarmed students were killed and 9 more wounded by members of the Ohio National Guard. Read more about the incident here.
Random Fact #1: Named for William S. Kent, who donated the 53 acres of land for the original campus. It is the only public university in Ohio named for an individual. William was the son of Marvin Kent, for whom the town of Kent was named.
Random Fact #2: In 1947, Oscar Ritchie became the first African-American professor at a state university in Ohio. In March of 1991, Carol Cartwright became the first female university president of a state university in Ohio.
Random Fact #3: The campus’ unofficial mascot is the black squirrel, which was originally brought on campus in 1961.
Random Fact #4: The university developed one of the earliest conflict management undergraduate programs in the United States in response to the 1970 shootings. Kent State also offers the only American Sign Language B.A. degree in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River.

Stony Brook University
Posted: June 11, 2012 Filed under: Getting to Know... | Tags: Christopher Walken, D-I Baseball, Joe Nathan, Stony Brook Leave a comment »Stony Brook has advanced to the College World Series this year, becoming just the 2nd regional 4th seed to do so since the current NCAA tournament format was adopted. They advanced by defeating LSU in Baton Rouge 2 games to 1 in the Super Regional, outhitting the Tigers 50 to 15 in the process. With Seawolves fever sweeping the college baseball nation, let’s learn a little more about Stony Brook, MegaBracket-style…
Stony Brook University
Location: Stony Brook, NY (population: 13, 727 as of 2000 census)
Founded: 1957
Enrollment: ~24,500
Nickname: Seawolves
Mascot: Wolfie the Seawolf – http://www.goseawolves.org/wolfie/wolfies-world.html
Random Fact #1: The university was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on October 15, 2006 due to being a long-standing concert site.
Random Fact #2: The Chemistry Department was designed a National Historic Landmark in 2011 by the American Chemical Society for its development of the MRI.
Random Fact #3: A popular event on campus is the annual Roth Pond Regatta. Each year dozens of competitors create boats out of cardboard and tape and race to be the first to cross Roth Pond without sinking. The regatta is also couple with a concert, headlined by Bruno Mars in 2011 and Wiz Khalifa in 2012.
Random Fact #4: The Seawolves competed in Division III until successfully completing the transition to Division I in 1999.
Notable Alumni: Co-host of The View Joy Behar; radio host Laura Schlessinger (Joy Behar and Dr. Laura? – yikes); co-creator of the Macintosh project at Apple, Jef Raksin; Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest college professor at the age of 18; Texas Ranger pitcher Joe Nathan; and music promoter Sandy Pearlman, who managed among others, Blue Oyster Cult (one of my Dad’s favorite bands). In the classic Saturday Night Live “More Cowbell” skit, Christopher Walken’s fictional producer Bruce Dickinson would in reality have been Sandy Pearlman (you come through once again MegaBracket!)
Famous Natives and Residents of Stony Brook: The inventor of the wave antenna, Harold Beverage; comedian/actor Kevin James; creator of Marvel Comics Stan Lee; and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister

UIFL
Posted: June 8, 2012 Filed under: MegaFacts | Tags: UIFL 1 Comment »The reasons why we MegaBracket (yep, I’m using it as a verb now, too) are as entertaining as they are endless. The awesomeness of the many random leagues we shine a small spotlight on cannot be overstated. However, instead of more flowery prose from me, lets let the UIFL speak for itself…
- The League Commissioner is Jared Lorenzen, who won last year’s league MVP while playing for the Northern Kentucky River Monsters. Before becoming the River Monsters’ QB last year, he was serving as the team’s GM.
- The Florida Tarpons have clinched the Southern Conference title with a 10-0 record heading into Saturday’s season finale, originally scheduled against the Western Pennsylvania Sting (see item 2 spots down). Florida has achieved this mastery while playing only 3 teams – 4 games each against the Lakeland Raiders and the Mississippi Hound Dogs and 2 against the Rome Rampage.
- The Eastern Kentucky Drillers have clinched 2nd place in the South at 5-4 with (maybe) 1 game remaining despite not playing the 1st place Tarpons at all. According to the league schedule, the Drillers are set to play the Rome Rampage this weekend, but the Rampage have not played since a 106-6 loss to Lakeland on April 27, so it seems unlikely the Drillers and Rampage will square off.
- Lakeland will finish 3rd at 5-5, with 4 of the 5 losses coming at the hands of the Tarpons. Last weekend they beat the Palm Beach Phantom 100-0. The Phantom are not listed anywhere else on the league’s website. Lakeland was scheduled to play Western Pennsylvania last Saturday but the Sting have not played anyone since losing 105-8 to the Drillers on April 29th. Apparently the 97-point loss to Eastern Kentucky was bad enough to disband the team.
- Meanwhile, in the Northern Conference, the website indicates the seeds have not been set. However, if the schedule and tiebreaker information are correct (admittedly a dubious prospect), the Erie Explosion have clinched the #1 seed due to its 2-1 record vs. playoff teams. Erie managed to play the two non-playoff teams in the conference a total of 6 teams as well as a game against the supposedly defunct Huntington Hammer (a 102-30 Explosion explosion).
- The Cincinnati Commandos appear to be headed to the #2 seed with a 7-2 league record, not including a 104-12 hammering of the Hammer (again, supposedly defunct – http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x1689944170/No-Headline).
- The 3rd seed has been locked down by the Marion Blue Racers, who are 6-4 and set to host Erie this weekend. Marion prepared for the playoffs by playing the Commandos in each of their last 4 games, splitting the series at 2 apiece. The Blue Racers also demolished the Huntington Hammer this season, although they were the only team of the 3 to not top 100 points, settling for a 98-6 victory.
- Thus, it appears that of the 10 teams that began the season, only 8 remain as the season nears its close. Additionally, two teams that are not listed on the website have played 4 games, losing all 4 by a combined score of 404-18.
- As is the MegaBracket tradition – write stuff first, then research later. Here is the official league news item regarding Western Pennsylvania (and the Johnstown Generals) – http://uiflfootball.com/uifl-suspends-johnstown-western-pa/. Follow-up note: On May 30th, Johnstown’s ownership group was re-instated and the team is finishing out the season.
- St. Louis, hello! The Missouri Monsters are coming your way in 2013 – http://uiflfootball.com/introducing-the-missouri-monsters/.
If I don’t stop now, I might never…
